Spring is just around the corner, which means winter is coming to an end and summer isn’t far behind it. Many people look forward to having their lawns look their best for all of the events that spring and summer tend to bring.

However, some people aren’t sure how to get their lawns looking good again, especially if they’re in an area that saw a lot of snow this past winter.

Fortunately, reclaiming your overgrown lawn is not as hard as you might think, and this article will show you how and why it is important.

    Read on to learn more.

    1. Work in Stages

If you have an overgrown lawn it can be overwhelming to imagine taking back control. Working in stages to reclaim your lawn is a great way to approach the project and make it manageable.

Start by tackling a small portion of the lawn first and work outwards, so you are not tackled by the entirety of the project at once. Consider dividing the sections into manageable strips, start at one end and work along.

    1. Have the Right Tools

Having the right type of mower is key for reclaiming an overgrown lawn. A high-quality string trimmer is a perfect tool to start with, as it can efficiently cut through thick patches of grass and weeds.

If the area is too big, a lawn mower and brush cutter may be necessary to cut down overgrown grass and weeds. Additionally, a spreader should be used to evenly distribute lawn fertilizer or weed killer, which will encourage healthy and strong grass growth.

    1. Remove the Debris

Removing debris from an overgrown lawn is an important step in reclaiming it. Begin by mowing your lawn as low as possible. This will make it easier to spot and remove debris more efficiently.

Picking up More visible debris like stray branches, rocks, and leaves will also help you determine which type of equipment to use or bring in to do the job. Be sure to always wear protective clothing such as gloves and goggles while picking up the debris.

    1. Decide What You’re Keeping

As you set out to reclaim your overgrown lawn, it is important to first decide what you’re keeping. Take stock of the plants that you would like to keep and those that need to be removed.

Consider which areas you would like to accentuate in your lawn, such as flower beds or trees, and mark off their borders. If you have any existing hardscape features, such as pathways or fences, observe them carefully and decide what repair or maintenance they need, if any.

    1. Mow Open Areas

Start by mowing the highest and longest grass first, paying attention to the angle at which you are mowing, so you don’t scalp the grass and weaken the roots.

After mowing, reduce the blade height by one-third and mow again until the entire lawn has been mowed. The direction you mow in is important and should be alternated with each pass.

Tips on Clearing an Overgrown Lawn

By following the tips discussed – like testing and adjusting soil pH levels, improving drainage, using the best mower for your lawn, and reseeding- you can easily reclaim your once-overgrown lawn.

The result will be an attractive, lush, and proudly displayed lawn you can confidently call your own. Get started today with your lawn reclamation project!
